Mumbai cop shoving cyclist for VIP convoy sparks outrage; traffic police to examine video
A few seconds of mobile-phone video from south Mumbai have reopened an old argument about VIP culture on Indian roads. The clip, shared on X by Shiv Sena MP Milind Deora, shows a traffic police officer pushing a cyclist carrying goods and then picking up his bicycle and throwing it to the side, all to keep a barricaded stretch clear for a passing convoy. Mumbai Traffic Police have said they will examine the footage before deciding on action.
What the video shows
According to ThePrint and The Free Press Journal, the incident took place on 2 September on P D'Mello Road near Carnac Bunder, a stretch heavily used by delivery workers and port traffic. A man with several items strapped to his bicycle tries to pass through a barricaded section. An officer pushes him and the bicycle backwards; the man loses his balance and falls, and his load spills. The officer then lifts the bicycle and flings it aside.
Neither report identifies the VIP whose convoy was being cleared, and the cyclist has not been named.
Deora's post and the reaction
Deora tagged Mumbai Police and the traffic department and wrote that, whoever the VIP was, "pushing a working cyclist & his bicycle is unacceptable. Every citizen deserves dignity." He asked for strict action so that it does not recur, ThePrint reported. The post had drawn more than 40,000 views within a short time, and replies ran heavily against the officer.
The wider conversation was less about one constable than about a system. Many users asked why ordinary commuters and workers are routinely held at barricades for minutes at a time, while a few argued that only ambulances and fire engines should be given that kind of priority. Others noted that the man on the bicycle was, quite literally, at work when he was shoved off the road.
What the police have said
The Free Press Journal reported that Mumbai Traffic Police would examine the video and verify the circumstances before taking any further step. ThePrint noted that, at the time of its report, neither Mumbai Police nor the traffic department had publicly responded to Deora's demand. No disciplinary action had been announced as of Friday.
The bigger picture
Complaints about convoy management are not new in Mumbai; the city's narrow arterial roads mean even a brief VIP movement can lock up traffic for blocks. What is different now is the ubiquity of cameras. A shove that might once have gone unrecorded is now a political issue within hours, and a sitting MP from the ruling alliance publicly demanding action against a police officer shows how quickly such clips can travel up the chain.
Whether the officer is disciplined, and whether convoy protocols change, will be the real test of what the video achieved. For now, the man with the bicycle has become an unwilling symbol of who waits and who passes on Mumbai's roads.
