BCCI AGM: Authorization obtained for chief selector appointment as IPL council members retained
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reached several key milestones during its latest high-level meeting. Following the 95th Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at the board's headquarters in Mumbai, officials confirmed that significant progress has been made regarding the leadership of the selection committee.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla clarified the current status of the selection panel. While the board has officially obtained the necessary authorization to appoint a chief selector, a final decision on who will fill the role has not yet been made and will be determined at a later date.
Selection Committee and IPL Council Updates
This development comes at a critical time for the men's senior selection committee. Ajit Agarkar, who was appointed as the chairman of the committee in July 2023, is currently serving out a term that is scheduled to conclude next month. The board's recent authorization ensures that the process for the next phase of leadership is officially underway.
In addition to the selection matters, the AGM finalized several important roles within the Indian Premier League (IPL) framework. The meeting confirmed that the existing leadership structure for the league will remain largely unchanged for the time being.
Specifically, the board decided to retain Arun Singh Dhumal and M Khairul Jamal Majumdar in their current positions within the IPL Governing Council. Shukla noted that the meeting was productive and that all major agenda items regarding the council were successfully finalized.
Membership Expansion and Financial Approvals
Beyond the league's administration, the BCCI is also expanding its reach to new territories. The General Body has officially authorized the granting of associate membership to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Cricket Association. Shukla indicated that this was one of the primary issues addressed during the session.
On the administrative and fiscal front, the meeting saw the adoption of several essential financial documents. The General Body took formal steps to ensure the board's long-term stability through the following actions:
- The adoption of the audited statement of accounts for the 2025-26 financial year.
- The approval of the annual budget for the upcoming 2026-27 period.
- The appointment of auditors to oversee the next financial year.
Future Celebrations and Policy Reforms
Looking toward the future, the BCCI is preparing for two massive milestones in the cricket calendar. The General Body has unanimously decided to celebrate the 20th edition of the IPL in 2027 on a grand scale. This will be followed by the board's own centenary celebrations in 2028.
To mark 100 years of the governing body, a year-long programme is being planned. This historic celebration is set to begin in December 2027 and will continue throughout the year 2028.
Internal policies also saw significant updates during the AGM to improve professional standards and inclusivity. The board unanimously approved an enhanced payment structure and a new reclassification of grades for both umpires and match referees. Furthermore, a new Internal Committee has been established under the BCCI’s Prevention of Sexual Harassment Policy, and an updated Age Verification Policy was adopted.
Finally, the board discussed ways to better support differently-abled cricketers. Discussions with state associations focused on providing the appropriate facilities and resources required to promote their development. The meeting was attended by several prominent figures, including BCCI president Mithun Manhas, secretary Devajit Saikia, Bengal Cricket Association president Sourav Ganguly, and Jharkhand State Cricket Association secretary Saurabh Tiwary.
